Co-operation
Verdera Oy, Finland
The Finnish company Verdera Oy is considered to be the biggest Nordic company when it comes to
producing biological plant protection agents against fungal diseases and as plant growth promotors.
By entering in a partnership with e~nema both companies have mutually expanded their range of
products and can synergetically combine their research and development activities. The co-operation
is aimed at improving the supply of biological plant protection agents not only in Europe but
world-wide. Besides, the companies see themselves as attractive partners for further strategic
partnerships with other companies active in the area of biological plant protection.

Bio Agri, Sweden
In collaboration with the Swedish company BioAgri, e~nema is working on the development of bacteria
based seed treatment agents. The bacterium used, Pseudomonas chlororaphis,
is attached to the seed and colonises the seedling immediately, hence competitively suppressing the growth of fungal
diseases on the plant. This is the first biologically based seed treatment for cereals. BioAgri
discovered the active bacterium, Pseudomonas chlororaphis and developed the formulation
and the method for seed-treatment. e~nema is developing the production and formulation technique on an industrial scale.

IInternational Animal Health Products, Australia
The company International Animal Health Products, Australia, has developed a product for keeping the water
clean in aquaculture. A mixture of 3 naturally occurring bacteria (Bacillus spp.),
which pose no risk or harm to humans or animals, is used to improve water quality in fish and shrimp
ponds. The bacteria mineralize organic substances, including the feces from fish and shrimpand hence keep the water clean. Other bacteria, particularly disease inducing Vibrio species and viruses
are significantly suppressed by the action of this bacteria mixture. E~nema has done pilot studies to improve
the production and the formulation of this Bacillus- based product.

Ballance Agri-Nutrients Limited, New Zealand
The fertilizer company Ballance Agri-Nutrients Limited in New Zealand is selling a product based on
entomopathogenic bacteria in New Zeland. This bacterium,
Serratia entomophila was discivered by the crown-Research Institute AgResearch.
Since 2002 e~nema has taken over the production of the bacterium in large scale fermentors.
Despite the huge distance of between Germany and New Zealand, the production at e~nema is currently the best
option for obtaining a reliable and economic biocontrol product. The bacterium is formulated
onto granules which are sawn into pastures. The white grubs take up the bacteria
and stop feeding within a few days. After a few weeks, they dye and the pathogenic bacteria
proliferate inside the dead larva.

Andermatt Biovet, Switzerland
The Swiss company Andermatt Biocontrol buys a biological control agent at e~nema which is used by bee-keepers.
The product formulation was specifically developed for this purpose. It contains the bacterium
Bacillus thuringiensis and kills young waxmoth larvae. This pest feeds on bees wax,
which is otherwise hardly degradable in nature, and causes significant economic losses in honey production. By
treating the honeycombs with the product, freshly hatched larvae immediately stop feeding and dye within a few days.
