nemapom®

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF PESTS IN FRUIT CULTIVATION

nemapom® contains beneficial nematodes of the species Steinernema feltiae and is effective against overwintering larvae of the codling moth (Cydia pomonella) and plum fruit moth (Grapholita funebrana) in pome and stone fruit. Application periods are autumn after harvest

and spring until pupation. With a soil application in spring, hatching plum sawflies (Hoplocampa flava + H. minuta) can also be controlled. nemapom® also reduces damage caused by the apple tree clearwing moth (Synanthedon myopaeformis).

APPLICATION OF NEMAPOM®

Codling moths overwinter as cocooned larvae in the bark or soil. The nematodes are mixed with water and a wetting agent and applied to the tree trunk or soil using a fan sprayer. Application is recommended from September to March, provided that temperatures are above 10 °C.

The application rate is 1.5 billion nematodes per hectare in at least 1,500 litres of water. It is important to ensure that the trunk or soil is well wetted and that conditions remain moist for at least 4 hours.

Plum sawflies can only be controlled in spring, two weeks before hatching. The application rate is 2 billion nematodes per hectare in at least 2,000 litres of water. The product is applied to the moist soil under the tree canopy. Watering before and after application is essential.

How nematodes work

nemapom® contains insect-pathogenic nematodes of the species Steinernema feltiae. The nematodes actively search for larvae behind the bark, in feeding tunnels and in the soil. They penetrate the larvae through their body openings and release their symbiotic bacteria. The larva dies within two days and the nematodes multiply inside it. They then attack other larvae. This creates a lasting effect.

Effectiveness of nemapom®

nemapom® reduces damage caused by overwintering codling moth larvae and sawflies by up to 80%. If the codling moth infestation is above 1% at harvest, nemapom® should be used. To date, there are no known cases of resistance to nematodes. Its use in organic farming is permitted under EU Organic Regulation 2018/848.
