NEMATODES AGAINST LEATHERJACKETS , ROOT BORER, RED PALM WEEVIL AND CATERPILLARS

nemastar® contains beneficial nematodes of the species Steinernema carpocapsae and controls the early larval stages of crane flies (Tipula spp.) in turf. The major pest in turf is the univoltine Tipula paludosa, but also the bivoltine Tipula oleracea can cause damage. nemastar® also provides good effects against mole crickets (Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa), cutworms (Agrotis spp.), flat-headed root borer (Capnodis tenebrionis), Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) and many other harmful caterpillars.

APPLICATION OF NEMASTAR®

The beneficial nematodes are embedded in a water soluble carrier material. This powder is simply mixed with water and can be applied via the irrigation system, drench application or soil injection. The exact dosage and application time depend on the type of pests to be controlled.

Application against Leatherjackets (Tipula spp.)

Treat two weeks after peak of flight from mid-September until mid-October with 0.5 million nematodes per square meter and a minimum of 100 ml of water. Turf and soil must be moist and soil temperatures should be > 14°C for some hours after application. Irrigation immediately after application washes the nematodes through the thatch layer into the soil. If soil is dry, irrigation before and after application is essential.Best applied in damp weather conditions.

Application against Flat-Headed Root Borer (Capnodis tenebrionis)

nemastar® is effective against all stages except eggs. It is applied through drip irrigation, by drench or soil injection in March-May and/or September/October, when soil humidity is high and temperature >14°C. If soil is dry, irrigation before and after application is necessary. The dose rate is 1-10 million nematodes per tree. To sanitize orchards, three consecutive applications are necessary. To prevent re-infestation, one application per season in autumn is usually sufficient.

Application against Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus)

Temperatures should be between 14° and 30°C during application. Application should be paused in July and August as the temperatures are too high Do not apply in direct sunlight. If possible, treat in the evening at lower temperatures.

Spray from above onto the base of the palm fronds and the top metre of the trunk. Wet the palm very thoroughly until the water drips off.

Dose rate: 10-25 million nematodes per palm (10 million for small palms), in 5-20 litres of water or 1 million nematodes per litre of spray mixture.

Application timing:

Curative (palm already infested): every 4 weeks
Preventive: every 6 weeks

Application against Cutworms and other Caterpillars

The general dose rate is 0.25 - 0.5 million Nematodes per m2. The soil should be moist and have a temperature of > 14°C for at least a couple of hours during the day. Nematodes need moisture in the soil to move and are sensitive to UV-Radiation. An application during damp and cloudy weather or in the twilight is recommended.

MODE OF ACTION

The nematodes find the insects and invade through natural openings into the body cavity, where they release their symbiotic bacteria. The bacteria multiply and kill the insect within 1-2 days. The nematodes feed on the bacteria and propagate. About 1,000 nematodes of the next generation emerge two weeks after application from one host insect. nemastar® is safe for beneficial insects, plants and humans.

EFFICACY OF NEMASTAR®

When used against leatherjackets, nemastar® is very efficient against young larvae (L1/L2) of Tipula spp., but less efficient against older larvae (L3/L4). In several field trials a control effect of up to 82% against Tipula paludosa larvae was achieved.

nemastar® has already been used on many thousand hectares in Mediterranean countries against Capnodis tenebrionis. In several field trials in apricot the efficacy ranged from 75–90% control depending on the application method.

nemastar® is compatible with most chemical plant protection compounds, fertilizers and other beneficial insects.
