Exciting research project: Nematodes as fish feed

e-nema is an active partner in the DELIFEED research project, an exciting project that aims to develop methods for providing healthy live feed for young fish in fish farms.

Three Danish universities, two companies (including e-nema GmbH, represented by our scientist Dr. Laurent Seychelles) and six fish producers are involved in the project. They all have the same goal: to make fish farming more efficient and sustainable and to improve the welfare of the fish.

Aquaculture is the fastest growing sector of animal food production worldwide, but the need for high-quality live feed for the early life stages of many fish species is a limiting factor.

Therefore, methods for the sustainable production of novel, healthy live feed for fish larvae and juvenile fish are to be developed, which can later be used on an industrial scale. The focus is on nematodes and white worms to replace the current fish food Artemia.

Dr. Seychelles will apply his expertise in nematode cultures here and optimize the production of three different nematode species for this project.

The project will also focus on technologies that reduce the need for antibiotics in aquaculture and techniques for cryopreserving the novel fish feed.
