We were delighted to welcome Brigitte Kranz from IBMA DA and Delara Burkhardt German member of the European Parliament for the S&D Group, to our premises in Schwentinental.
The meeting centred on a topic close to our heart: Biological plant protection.
The European Commission’s draft proposal to streamline the authorisation of plant protection products is currently being debated in the European Parliament – a crucial step for the future of agriculture.
Ms Burkhardt wanted to hear first-hand how we, as a manufacturer of organic solutions, assess the pros and cons of this proposal.
From our perspective, the draft offers important opportunities that are urgently needed:
- Legally binding definition: At last, a clear and reliable legal definition of organic plant protection.
- Streamlining of procedures: Significantly shorter authorisation times and a noticeable reduction in bureaucracy.
- A European single market: Moving away from national unilateral approaches – towards automatic authorisation and improved mutual recognition between Member States.
- Provisional authorisations: The possibility of provisional market authorisation for biological products whilst the regular procedure is still ongoing.
- Clear prioritisation: Genuine preference for biological alternatives within the system.
Whilst there is a clear need to speed up the process and reduce bureaucracy, one thing is absolutely crucial to us: there must be no watering down of the risk assessment provisions in the existing Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009! There must be no loopholes for substances that, due to their hazardous properties, should in fact be phased out.
Thank you very much, Ms Burkhardt, for your genuine interest in our work, the open dialogue and your commitment to creating a sustainable framework in the EU!
